Products need information and media
A product is rarely described by text alone. Images show variants and details. Drawings explain dimensions. Data sheets and manuals support advice and use. For these to work together, product data and media need a traceable connection.
PIM stands for Product Information Management. A PIM system organizes structured product information such as descriptions, attributes, and classifications. A DAM system takes care of digital media and its metadata, versions, and delivery.
Clarify ownership early
A robust integration needs a clear answer to which system owns which information. An article number might come from the PIM, while image format and file version are managed in the DAM. Language or market assignments may need coordination between both systems.
These decisions should be made before the technical connection is built. If two systems can change the same value independently, conflicts follow. A shared information model makes clear where values originate and which direction they flow.
A typical workflow
A product team creates an article with a unique identifier. Images are ingested into the DAM and linked to that article. The integration passes the required assignments or media references on to the PIM. From there, product data and matching media can reach the intended channels.
The exact implementation depends on your PIM, your shop, and your other systems. Media can be transferred as files or referenced through suitable delivery paths. Both approaches affect how updates, formats, and ownership work.
Five questions for your integration workshop
Also check the edge cases: one image can belong to several products. A product may need different media per market. And a piece of media can be retired while the product itself stays on offer. Situations like these belong in the planning stage.
- Which identifier links products and media unambiguously?
- Which system owns which metadata?
- How are variants, languages, and markets represented?
- When is a change propagated, and how do errors surface?
- Which media formats and access rules does each channel need?
Start with what you already have
Fully automating every process is rarely a prerequisite for a good start. A clearly scoped channel or product group can be enough to begin with. A test with representative content quickly shows whether linking, updates, and delivery actually work.
Agravity GlobalDAM offers APIs and integration options. Its technology ecosystem includes ATAMYA and elytra, among others. Together, we check which existing connector covers your use case and what still needs to be planned as a custom project integration.
